Safest Areas to Stay in Lima | Peru

Peru is generally one of the safest countries in South America, but unfortunately within Peru, Lima is one of the most dangerous cities.

But don't be disheartened by this, it is a wonderful city to visit and in this article, I will share with you the best and safest areas to stay in Lima.

I will also share with you some areas in Lima where you should be extra cautious.

Safest and best areas to stay in Lima

Miraflores

My absolute top favorite area in Lima has to be Miraflores! Not only it is one of the safest areas in Lima where to stay but also simply a lovely area to explore and be in! There you will find places like the Park of Love which is a wonderful location from where to see the beautiful coast of Lima.

In the Miraflores district, you will find hotels like Marriott and also more budget-friendly ones like Ibis and independent boutique hotels and hostels.

Barranco

Next on the list is Barranco - also a fairly safe where to stay but offers a completely different vibe. Barranco district is more artistic, you will find many wonderful street murals there. I would classify it more as a hipster area. This district is next to Miraflores, so you will still be a short taxi drive from all the restaurants and entertainment that Miraflores has to offer. But you will be able to find more budget-friendly accommodation options.

San Isidro

As the final one, I want to offer San Isidro, which is more like a business district. This might not be the best location to stay at in sense of culture and sites, but this definitely will be a very safe option to stay at.

This area is ideal for remote workers looking for a longer-term base as the area is full of coffee shops, co-working spaces, and a wonderful promenade where to unwind from a long working day.

Areas where you should be extra cautious when in Lima

There are several areas that you should avoid but they are a bit out of the way and really there won't be any reason for you to visit them, which is why I want to highlight 2 areas you most probably will be visiting!

Lima Downtown

You will probably visit Lima's Historial Center aka the Downtown. I highly recommend visiting during the day, ideally with one of the city tours. This is a must-see area but is also known for being pickpocket-central. Be aware of your belongings and don't wander too much outside the historical center and main sites.

Callao

Callao is the area around the airport. So if you are flying in, don't wander too much around looking for a taxi. Get the one at the airport or I personally recommend better using Uber as I found it the safest way to travel in South American cities.
